If the next sail is to be improved then performance of the last sail made must be evaluated in depth. Staff at Hood take digital photos of sails in use and record the comments of crews that have used the sails. With photos and feedback on performance sail designers are therefore able to evaluate the effective outcome of their work. Thanks to special sail photo analysis programs profile values for mainsails and genoas can be captured as can vertical curve values (leech, luff and central curve) for spis and gennakers. These values are then entered in an Xcel spreadsheet where they are charted and compared with both the design values and those calculated by the Sailopt aerodynamic simulation program. And so the sail designer is able to properly evaluate the sail produced and decide possible modifications to be introduced in the next design. |
