The shapes of assymmetrical spins or assymetric spinnakers proposed by Hood vary widely depending on the apparent wind angle the sail must work with. A sail designed for bearing off as much as possible will be radically different from one that will only be used in light wind conditions, when the bow angle will never be very wide. Latest generation Hood gennakers are designed with a lot of twist to
limit aerodynamic stalling in the upper section of the sail due to the
difference in the apparent wind angle between the lower and upper
sections, which is more pronounced when bearing off as opposed to when
sailing on close reach. |
